Message must be something acting against it to push or drag it. This indicates the object has mass for something to act against it. Light is energy; it has no matter to push or drag. If light hits an opaque object, like a brick wall, it's speed is exactly zero. If it can pass through some kind of diffuser (in Ash's case a glass) the energy is diminished but the speed of the light is still constant.
